Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng, born 21 November 1985 in Malaysia, is a comedian and actor. Chieng is
currently a senior correspondent on The Daily Show on Comedy Central and
creator and star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student which debuted
on ABC (Australia) as well as Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born to
an Malaysian Chinese couple in Johor Bahru (Malaysia). Chieng was born in
Singapore as well as the United States. He lived in Manchester, New Hampshire,
from 1989 to 1994. Chieng appeared with Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy
festival in 2013. Chieng was later asked to be a candidate for the role of
Noah's Daily Show two years later. Chieng was selected as one of the top 10
comics in the July issue of Variety. In October 2016, Chieng joined The Daily
Show to discuss the controversy surrounding a Jesse Watters Fox News segment
some believed was racist. Chieng spoke in expletive-laden terms regarding the
segment on Fox News, a conservative news network. Chieng also visited New york
City's Chinatown in which Watters had ridiculed the residents. The viral video
received coverage in Slate as well as the Washington Post. In his youth, Chieng
was an Singapore Sea Scout. Chieng hasn't been able to obtain citizenship or
permanent residency status in Australia despite having lived in Australia for
10 years. Chieng made the joke that he was intolerant of dogs on 2018's Daily
Show. But Chieng later claimed that he's "100 percent not scared of
dogs" in an interview.
